James Shirley Hibberd (1825–1890) was a best-selling editor of three gardening magazines, one of which is still published today. He promoted town gardening, bee-keeping, vegetarianism, water recycling, the prevention of cruelty to animals, and other similar causes. He produced two series of books with color plates, New and Rare Beautiful-Leaved Plants and Familiar Garden Flowers. This is a plate from the latter, by Frederick Edward Hulme, probably from the 1880s.
